Shredding Light on the Future: Why Our Skatepark Needs Lighting

As the days grow shorter and winter settles in, our beloved Auburn Skate Park becomes increasingly inaccessible to the very community it serves. By 4:30 or 5:00 PM -darkness- cutting the opportunity for skaters to practice, connect, and shred in this incredible space. For many in our community—students, working professionals, working unprofessionals, and families alike—this early end to the day leaves little to no time to skate. It’s time for us to change that by installing lights at the park.

A Special Milestone: 25 Years of the Auburn Skatepark

March 1, 2026, will mark the 25th anniversary of the Auburn Skate Park, which finally opened the gate March 1, 2001. From the very beginning, the park was designed to include the installation of conduit around its perimeter to accommodate lights! (“is it actually there?” -We are not sure, and we are actively seeking anyone with a professional opinion willing to donate their time to help us solidify this answer!) What's a better way to celebrate this incredible milestone than by finally bringing those plans to life? Lights would be the ultimate 25th birthday present for the park and the community that has cherished it for so long.

A Solution That Brightens Lives!

Here’s a short list of reasons why lighting is not just a want, but a need:

  1. Extended Hours for Community Access
Lighting would give skaters of all ages and skill levels the opportunity to use the park after work, school, or other daytime obligations in the winter. As we know, winter here is often dry and warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities, that’s why all of the pickleball courts, baseball courts and downtown areas have lights, so people can continue to enjoy them! It would provide a space to unwind, connect, and hone skills during the traditionally “less active” months of the year.

  2. Enhanced Safety and Security
Most damage and “unwanted” behaviors occur when the park is left in darkness. By extending the use of the park by keeping it well-lit, we can deter these activities and ensure the space remains a positive, thriving environment for skaters. A brightly lit skatepark sends a clear message: this is a space for skating.

  3. Building a Stronger Skate Community
More hours of practice mean better skills, which inspires more participation and growth in the skate community. With The X Games coming to Sacramento for the next four years, Auburn has a unique opportunity to shine on a global stage. Installing lights would attract talented skaters from across the region—and possibly the world—to our park, boosting morale and fostering connections between local and visiting athletes.

  4. Maximizing an Existing Resource
The Auburn Skate Park is already an incredible space, but it has so much untapped potential. Adding lights would be a simple yet transformative step, allowing our community to enjoy this resource to its fullest.

A Call to Action!

This is about more than just skating. It’s about creating a safe, inclusive space where people can connect, grow, and get gnarly. It’s about showing that Auburn values its skate community and recognizes its role in fostering creativity, resilience, and camaraderie.

We’re reaching out to our community—businesses, local leaders, and residents—to join us in making this vision a reality. Together, we can light the way for a brighter, safer, and more active Auburn Skate Park, ensuring it remains a place of inspiration and connection for generations to come.

Let’s make it happen. Let’s bring light to the park and to the lives of those who call it their second home.
